The Myth of the Super Lawyer: Very Human Problems That Can Lead to Discipline

Super lawyers think they can handle it all: crushing workloads, long hours, client demands, difficult cases, economic pressures, family obligations; the list goes on. We dress up in our “superlawyer” suits and enter the arena for another round.  But is this good for us? Professionally? Personally? A review of lawyer discipline cases reveals that the answer is a resounding NO!  Attorneys who get sanctioned are often good people who got into a bad spot – involving the same kinds of pressures that affect us all.  This program examines how “personal problems” (under the ABA mitigating factor 9.32(c)) impacts lawyers, and forces us to gaze into a mirror reflecting our own misplaced sense of invincibility.

Karen “KC” Clark is a legal ethics expert, with over 36 years of practice.  She spent eight years at the State Bar of Arizona: six as Bar Counsel, two as Ethics Counsel.  Next she worked at her own firm for 14 years, focusing her practice solely on legal ethics.  After many years of law practice, she learned that practicing mindfulness made her a better, healthier, happier lawyer (and person).  KC is a certified Meditation Teacher and Mindfulness at Work Trainer, and provides CLE programs for how lawyers on how they can live and work better. She now focuses her legal practice on representing applicants to the State Bar.
